Unravelling megaturbidite deposition: Evidence for turbidite stacking/amalgamation and seiche influence during the 1601 <scp>ce</scp> earthquake at Lake Lucerne, Switzerland

چکیده

Megaturbidites are commonly used to reconstruct the seismic history (palaeoseismology) of areas where large earthquakes occur. However, depositional mechanisms and sedimentary characteristics these deposits not yet fully understood. This study unravels sequence sediment deposition that occurred in Lake Lucerne (Vitznau Basin) following 1601 ce earthquake central Switzerland. During this event, slope failures were triggered, generating mass flows turbidity currents led formation mass-transport a megaturbidite. These sampled 28 cores, which examined with X-ray computed tomography scans (medical μCT), grain-size analysis natural remanent magnetisation. suite analyses allows detailed reconstruction turbidite stacking amalgamation centre basin, followed by settling finer sediments influenced lake seiche. Initial is sandy turbidites reaching depocentre. Some sands can be linked their source areas, evidence found some being overridden peripheral parts megaturbidite deposit. Hereafter, sedimentation becomes controlled seiche-induced currents, rework fine upon deposition, leading subtle variations at base seiche-influenced sub-unit ponded geometry As seiche movement dampens, relatively muddy, homogeneous deposited drapes basin plain. Overall, provides first highly sedimentological lake, demonstrating distinct imprint seiching amalgamation/stacking. will improve recognition interpretation earthquake-induced megaturbidites other records or isolated basins, demonstrates value using (μ)CT combination traditional parameters processes megaturbidites.

the current study aimed at investigating the relationship between motivation and test preparation strategies (tpss) used by iranian pre-university students in their preparation period for the university entrance exam (uee). due to the importance of uee in iran, this study also attempted to show its impact on these two important variables. to this end, 100 pre-university students in an iranian p...

Late Pleistocene earthquake-triggered moraine dam failure and outburst of Lake Zurich, Switzerland

[1] Lakes impounded by moraines may be considered hazardous in glaciated areas throughout the world because dams can fail suddenly producing destructive floods with peak discharges far in excess of normal flows. Here we present a comprehensive case study in the Zurich, Switzerland, area that reveals several independent lines of evidences for the occurrence of a Late Pleistocene ( 13,760 calibra...

Visualization of large-scale internal seiche in Lake Inawashiro

Field observation of water temperature in Lake Inawashiro has been carried out in 1999. Spatial variation of the temperature in the whole area of the lake can be obtained using a simple linear interpolation method, as seen in the figures. In Figs.1 and 2, strong wind from the left caused deepening of the interfacial layer on the right hand side. Subsequently, upwelling of cold water was observe...

the search for the self in becketts theatre: waiting for godot and endgame

this thesis is based upon the works of samuel beckett. one of the greatest writers of contemporary literature. here, i have tried to focus on one of the main themes in becketts works: the search for the real "me" or the real self, which is not only a problem to be solved for beckett man but also for each of us. i have tried to show becketts techniques in approaching this unattainable goal, base...

Historical seismograms for unravelling a mysterious earthquake: The 1907 Sumatra Earthquake

S U M M A R Y History of instrumental seismology is short. Seismograms are available only for a little more than 100 years; high-quality seismograms are available only for the last 50 years and the seismological database is very limited in time. To extend the database, seismograms of old events are of vital importance. Many unusual earthquakes are known to have occurred, but their seismological...
